arrow Live Linux CDs: Building & Customizing Bootables (A Book Review) - 3 Feb 2007

Red Hat Magazine has a great book review of “Live Linux CDs: Building & Customizing Bootables”. As the article indicates “Live Linux CDs is organized into three sections: Beginning with Bootable Live Linuxes, Creating a Custom Bootable Linux, and Making a Specialized Bootable Linux. As the sections progress, so does the level of difficulty. A Linux newcomer should be able to get through Section 1, but may need the occasional life-line in the remaining chapters”.

arrow Fedora 6 Zod Live CD And FreeSBIE 2.0 - 3 Feb 2007

As I have not posted a link to either of these two recently released distros I thought I would take the time and do so now.

From the Fedora Release Notes: “After lots of feedback, bug fixing and testing of the beta live CD announced 3 weeks ago, I'm pleased to announce the first official Fedora live CD. This live CD is based on packages from the Fedora Core 6 (codenamed "Zod") and Fedora Extras package collections and is such 100% free software.”

arrow Mandriva Metisse - 25 Jan 2007

Mandriva has just released a live CD that features the Metisse 3D window manager. As noted on it website: “Metisse is a window manager developped by the In Situ project. Available under the GPL Licence and in exclusivity for Mandriva Linux, Metisse differs from a classic 3D desktop ("the cube") in the way that it offers innovative windows interactions, thus enforcing work efficiency. The copy-paste feature is the most easy and amazing example of Metisse full power.”

Some of its other features include GNOME desktop and runs on openGL so high end graphics cards are not required.

It is available for download here.

arrow Moulin: The Wikipedia Live CD - 23 Jan 2007

Although not completed yet Moulin will prove to be a nice take on what Live CD technology can do. The projects goal is to create a Live CD that will contain the Wikipedia data base so all the content (minus pictures) is available off-line. The initial release is not actually a Live CD but an ISO containing Wikipedia in French with the English version soon to follow. After additional testing the application will be placed on a Live CD.

As noted on the website: “The moulin project was started by IESC Geekcorps Mali with funding provided by USAID.
